HK's new logistics centre to boost air cargo capacity by 50pc in 2023

HONG Kong's new premium logistics centre, under construction on Lantau Island near the airport, is to the opened in 2023 paving the way for an additional 1.7 million tonnes of air cargo a year, according to the territory's Secretary for Transport and Housing, Frank Chan.

Speaking online on the second day of the 2020 Asian Logistics, Maritime and Aviation Conference (ALMAC) held in Hong Kong, Mr Chan said the new facility will help improve capability of warehousing and shipment distribution.
He pointed out trading and logistics is one of Hong Kong's four pillar industries, accounting for 21 per cent of GDP and 19 per cent of the territory's total employment.
"Thus, our logistics, maritime and aviation industries combined play a pivotal role in sustaining Hong Kong's economic growth."
Commenting on the growth in online shopping, Mr Chan said Hong Kong was in the course of expanding its express air cargo terminal to cope with the increasing demand for express and small parcel delivery.
"With completion in 2022, out handling capacity will increase by some 50 per cent to over a million tonners per year."
Mr Chan said the Hong Kong Government has also rolled out a HKD300 million (US$38.7 million) scheme to encourage the logistics sector in adopting more technology and IT solutions.
"Consumers demand fast and reliable delivery at low cost," Mr Chan said, adding that "wide adoption of technology would add value for our partners and consumers in the region and across the globe".
The 10th ALMAC, an annual signature event, is jointly organised by the government of the Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.
