Nansha, part of the Guangzhou Port Group (GPG), after a poor first quarter caught up in the next three quarters with volumes to and from North America, up 55.7 per cent year on year, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

Nansha, which generates 75 per cent of the total Guangzhou port's volume, saw throughput grow again for the 15th year in a row, as manufacturing migrated to the western side of the Pearl.

The port's growth is a feature of the GBA's own expansion, as the economies in the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen have matured from manufacturing hubs to urban centres. Like Hong Kong, these cities now boast a large population of consumers, and imports of perishables and consumer products are growing at double digit rates building a two-way trade for Nansha.

To keep up with demand, Nansha plans the opening of their on-dock rail system, a state of the art eight-storey cold logistics facility, 350,000 square metred of dry warehousing and the opening of its fourth fully automated terminal adding five million TEU more capacity.
