Ports in Mexico handle 5m TEU, up 22pc in January to August

MEXICAN ports handled 5.11 million TEU between January and August - an increase of 22.2 per cent over the same period in 2020, reports Colchester's Seatrade Maritiime News.

The figure is higher by 6.7 per cent based on 2019, thus surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
According to figures from the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), 3.57 million TEU were handled through the Pacific ports, 23.2 per cent more than the 2.89 million TEU registered from January to August 2020, and 9.1 per cent higher than in 2019.
On the Pacific coast, Manzanillo moved 2.21 million TEU (+18.2 per cent); followed by Lazaro Cardenas with 1.02 million TEU (+46.9 per cent). Meanwhile, the Port of Ensenada handled 247,144 TEU (+1.2 per cent); Puerto Chiapas 28,504 TEU (-6.7 per cent); Mazatlan 27,808 TEU (+1.6 per cent); Guaymas 11,835 TEU (+11.8 per cent); and Salina Cruz 2,159 TEU (+6.4 per cent).
The ports of the Gulf of Mexico handled 1.54 million TEU, with a growth of 19.7 per cent compared to the same period of 2020; in addition to being 1.4 per cent higher that in the same period in 2019, according to the agency.
The Port of Veracruz moved 765,870 TEU (+0.5 per cent); Altamira 592,104 TEU (+10.3 per cent); Progreso 109,010 TEU (+21.3 per cent); Tuxpan 25,687 TEU (+308 per cent); Coatzacoalcos 12,860 TEU (-5.7 per cent); Tampico 7,003 TEU (+148 per cent); and Puerto Morelos 5,610 TEU (-5.1 per cent).
Based on statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine, import traffic grew 24.7 per cent with 2.59 million TEU, compared to 2.07 million TEU; and exports grew 19.6 per cent with 2.52 million TEU compared to 2.11 million TEU from January to August 2020.
