Author:   Posttime:2022-05-13

THE total throughput of Port of Antwerp amounted to 58.3 million tonnes in the first quarter, dropping 1.5 per cent from the same period of last year, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

In the first quarter of 2022, container traffic saw a fall of 11.6 per cent in TEU compared to the same period last year.
The disruption to container liner trade, delays, and high import call sizes are posing operational challenges, making the operation of the container terminals more difficult.
Also, the Russia-Ukraine war and the sanctions imposed also put pressure on the number of containers handled.
Conventional general cargo grew 49.1 per cent compared to the weak first quarter of 2021. Roll-on, Roll-off (RoRo) saw slight growth at 2.4 per cent, but there has been a significant fall in tonnage since the strong last quarter of 2021.
The throughput of fertilisers dropped 19.6 per cent. The dry bulk segment grew 11.1 per cent while liquid bulk rose 15.3 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2021, with a growth of 16.6 per cent in petroleum derivatives.
