THE 5,500-TEU Rio Madeira lost power and was adrift for two days off Sydney while half a world away, the 3,000-TEU MSC Atlantic was adrift off Gambia after it too lost power.

Both ships were under tow after tugs from Australia and Senegal, according to separate reports from the Maritime Journal, late of Kiev and the MonFleet of Rostock, Germany.
The Singapore-flagged Rio Madeira drifted south along the New South Wales coast, some 30 nautical miles offshore and was towed into Sydney.
The Panama-flagged MSC Atlantic was first reported abandoned, adrift 60 northwest of Serekunda, Gambia, bound for Las Palmas. It was surrounded by tugs, but little more is known at this writing.
