Phoenix, Arizona, uses shipping containers to house the homeless

Author:   Posttime:2023-08-10

Phoenix officials proudly showcased the city's first "XWing" structure, a unique dwelling crafted from converted shipping containers, designed to provide a housing solution for the homeless, reports Tucson's AZPM.

The project, jointly developed by the city of Phoenix, St Vincent de Paul, and Steel + Spark, was unveiled at the Washington Relief Shelter near downtown.

However, this innovative dwelling is not meant for just anyone seeking temporary shelter. Instead, individual case managers at St Vincent de Paul will be responsible for referring people to the new shelter, according to Marisol Saldivar, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit.

The XWing structure is intended for residents who are more independent and feel they would benefit from having their own space or added security behind a door.
