BRAZIL's Tecon Santos container terminal is amid an ambitious expansion and modernization initiative, backed by a total investment of US$520 million, aimed at elevating its annual capacity to 3 million TEU, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.

Initiated in 2019, the first phase, completed in 2021, involved extending the terminal's quay to a substantial 1,510 metres, establishing the largest contiguous quay in Latin America.

This expansion permits the simultaneous berthing of three 366-metre-neopanamax vessels and one Ro-Ro vessel.

The ongoing second phase encompasses investments in yard infrastructure and the acquisition of electrical equipment, including eight E-RTGs, two gantry cranes, 30 tractor-trailer sets, and 30 semi-trailers.

The cranes are expected to arrive at the terminal by the end of November.

Tecon Santos is incorporating cutting-edge technology, including the Opus-TOS terminal operation system from CyberLogitec, which has operated since September.

This system has led to a significant enhancement in the company's operational efficiency, streamlining container operations, and boosting service quality, planning capabilities, and overall productivity.

Santos Brasil director Roberto Teller emphasizes the company's growth strategy across three key domains: containers and general cargo, integrated logistics, and liquid bulk.

The commitment remains strong to invest significantly in expanding and modernizing this facility, ensuring its ability to meet the port's evolving demands in the years ahead.

Santos Brasil, in addition to Tecon Santos, manages the Vehicle Terminal (TEV) on the Left Bank of the Port of Santos, the Saboo Logistics Terminal for general cargo on the Right Bank, and two Customs Industrial Logistic Centres, namely Clia Santos and Clia Guaruja.
