CANADA's east coast PSA Halifax has taken delivery two brand new mega ship-to-shore (STS) cranes for its Atlantic Hub terminal at the south end of the port.

The additional ultra-large cranes will be added to the terminal's five existing super postpanamax cranes, allowing PSA Halifax to handle the largest container vessels on the North American east coast.



This new equipment will also help PSA Halifax increase its capacity from 1.1 million to 1.4 million TEU by the end of 2024, reports London's Port Technology.



The new STS cranes departed Shanghai on September, 2023, and landed safely in Halifax two months later.



The new equipment, which is scheduled to be online in January 2024, will go through six weeks of commissioning and testing, according to PSA Halifax.



"With an outreach of 24 container rows and a lift height of 52 metres, the new cranes will add significant muscle and capacity to Atlantic Hub," said PSA Halifax CEO Jan Van Mossevelde.



"We will now have three STS cranes that are fully capable of handling vessels larger than 20,000 TEU with no limitations. This means higher vessel productivity and faster turnaround times for mega vessels."



In August, the Halifax Port Authority (HPA) partnered with Marine Thinking, a member company at The PIER, to test new technology at the Port of Halifax.



Three months later, PSA Singapore (PSA) and Pacific International Lines (PIL) signed a MoU to jointly develop sustainable solutions to cut carbon emissions and optimise maritime efficiency.
