FINNISH technology conglomerate Wartsila has been chosen to provide an integrated hybrid propulsion system for three upcoming self-discharging cargo vessels being constructed at the Royal Bodewes shipyard in the Netherlands for Norwegian shipowner Aasen Shipping, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy.
As a key component of this solution, the vessels will incorporate the latest addition to Wartsila's engine lineup-the Wartsila 25, unveiled in September 2022.
Both the engines and the vessels are designed to accommodate future operations using sustainable fuels.
Wartsila has previously supplied a comparable hybrid propulsion for two earlier Aasen Shipping vessels: the Aasfoss and Aasfjell.
These ships have operated successfully with the hybrid propulsion system for nearly two years, and their performance has significantly influenced the decision to award Wartsila the contract for these new vessels, as stated by the company.
