OMAN's Salalah Port posted a year-on-year 18 per cent decline in 2023 container throughput to 3.79 million TEU, reported Dubai's Maritime Standard.

The port recorded a total cargo throughput of 21.38 million tonnes, marking a significant increase of 16.26 per cent from the 18.39 million tonnes handled in 2022.



Notably, dry bulk volumes surged from 14.06 million tonnes to 17.4 million tonnes, representing a growth of 22.88 per cent.



Similarly, break bulk cargo volumes witnessed a substantial rise from 1.66 million tonnes in 2022 to 2.17 million tonnes in 2023, marking an increase of 30.72 per cent.



However, liquid volumes experienced a notable decline from 2.67 million tonnes in 2022 to 1.79 million tonnes in 2023, representing a dip of over 33 per cent.



Transshipment activity notably declined from 3.94 million TEU to 3.3 million TEU in the same period. Nonetheless, import and export volumes remained steady at 125,585 TEU and 153,629 TEU respectively, mirroring figures from 2022.



Asyad oversees several interconnected ports in Oman, including Sohar and Duqm. Sohar recently celebrated two decades of operations as the nation's primary gateway for imports and exports.



It currently contributes 2.1 per cent to the country's GDP and handles 80 per cent of its trade.



Meanwhile, at Duqm, the newly operational Asyad Container Terminal boasts three berths, a quay spanning over 1,000 metres, a design throughput capacity exceeding one million TEU, and stacking capabilities for over 600 reefer containers.
