Guangxi half-year volume growth slows to 5.3pc, but boxes up 15.7pc

PORTS in southwestern China's Guangxi Autonomous Region posted a 5.3 per cent year-on-year decline in territorial port cargo volume to 135 million tonnes during the first half of the year, Xinhua reports.
Container throughput increased 15.7 per cent to 692,100 TEU, representing a 4.3 per cent lower growth than in the first half of 2012, according to the Guangxi Statistics Bureau.
Throughput of foreign trade shipments were up 2.1 per cent to 53 million tonnes during the same period, and again the growth was 29.5 per cent slower than in the first quarter of the year.
Beibu Gulf Port, a cluster of the largest ports in Guangxi, recorded a weak increase of 1.1 per cent, which is 18.6 percentage points slower year on year, to 58 million tonnes. River ports in the region handled 50 million tonnes of shipments, up 13.4 per cent year on year but the growth was 3.9 percentage points lower.
In the same period, Guangxi's rail, road and waterway cargo turnover totalled 214.51 billion tonnes per kilometre, up five per cent year on year but the growth was 11.5 percentage points slower year on year and 0.7 per cent slower compared to the first five months of this year.
