Record newbuild orders for alt-fueled ships in first half

AS regulations become more restrictive, London's Clarksons Research has noted the record numbers of first half newbuild orders there has been for alternative-fueled vessels, reports Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.

A record 268 newbuild vessel orders were alternative fuelled, which constituted 61 per cent of all newbuild orders placed by tonnage, and 38 per cent based on vessel numbers as well as 68 per cent of contract value.
Excluding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, there were 174 alternative fuel-capable units ordered of US$18.4 billion ordered in the first half.
Fifty-nine per cent have been LNG dual-fuelled, 1.6 per cent methanol fuelled, 0.3 per cent of orders have been ethane fuelled, and 0.8 per cent include battery hybrid propulsion.
Furthermore, 16.3 per cent of orders were ammonia ready, 0.8 per cent of orders were LNG ready, and 0.1 per cent of orders have been hydrogen ready.
Uptake of alternative fuels has continued to progress, with 4.7 per cent of the fleet on the water and 41.3 per cent of the order book in tonnage (GT),
Energy-saving technologies (ESTs) have been fitted on over 5,300 ships, accounting for 23.6 per cent of fleet tonnage.
