China's peak summer season rail travel drops to 8-year low

RAIL travel in China hit and eight-year low in the usually busy summer months, according to official data, Reuters reports.

Some 440 million passenger trips were taken on China's railways through July and August, its lowest since 2014, according to data from China Railway.
This was down 4.8 per cent from 462 million trips taken in the same period in 2021 and 3.5 per cent that the 456 million trips in 2020 at the height of the Covid crisis.
The summer is one of China's busiest transport seasons as families and college students travel to scenic spots and return home from schools. But Covid restrictions imposed in multiple cities for the past months, have disrupted travel plans.
