THE European Commission has declared that it welcomes the agreement between itself, the European Parliament and the European Council to oblige the maritime sector to join the EU in cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent by 2030.
"Ships must and will shift away from fossil fuels," said EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean in the EU communique. "We are sending a clear signal to shipowners and operators to fuel producers, shipyards and equipment manufacturers that it is necessary to invest in zero-emission technologies."
The political agreement must now be ratified by the Parliament and the Council and the new rules will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force 20 days later.
Key is FuelEU Maritime - a new EU regulation ensuring that fossil fuels will decrease by two per cent in 2025 to as much as 80 per cent by 2050.
The deal complements last December's agreement to include shipping emissions in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
The EU mandate will ensure the market for eco-fuels will grow by forcing demand for low-carbon fuels, thus contributing to climate goals.
New rules require zero-emission at berth, mandating the use of on-shore power supply (OPS) or alternative zero-emission technologies.
