Saudi ports handle 2.01 million TEU in first quarter

THE Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) has reported an increase of 17.57 per cent in container handling at its trade hubs during Q1 2023, tallying a throughput of 2.01 million TEU compared to 1.71 million TEU last year.

Quarterly container statistics further show a 16.08 per cent spike in exported TEU, attaining a total of 559,829 TEU against the backdrop of last year's Q1 volume of 513,273 TEU.



Imported containers performed better with a year-on-year rise of 22.43 per cent from 520,509 TEU to 637,277 TEU, reports London's Port Technology.



Meanwhile, transshipments received a 14.96 per cent boost to volumes last quarter, growing from 676,826 TEU to 778,056 TEU.



Cargo number also trended upwards for Q1 2023, soaring to 4.11 per cent at 75.55 million tonnes in contrast to 72.57 million tonnes in the year before.



Inbound vessels, too, recorded an 11.48 per cent surge relative to last year's numbers with 2,855 ships entering Saudi waters versus 2,561 in the preceding year.
