Japan's 752-TEU Hakone Maru, formerly operated by NYK, has been recognised by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) as Japan's first real purpose-build box ship, reports Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.

The honour is given to ships that have historical, academic, and technical value, promote public understanding, and are regarded as symbols of cultural heritage for future generations.
The ship was completed at the Kobe shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in August 1968.
