CMA CGM blocks Mali as coup results in border closure

Author:   Posttime:2022-01-27

RESTRICTIONS imposed by the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) which have effectively closed the border into the north African republic of Mali, has made it nearly impossible for French shipping giant CMA CGM to deliver cargo there, said a company advisory.

Thus, any new booking under Carrier Haulage to or from Mali are suspended until further notice, with the following exceptions: Petroleum and electricity products food products; pharmaceuticals, medical materials and equipment.
The official list of the authorised commodities is available at: https://www.ecowas.int/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Final-Communiqueon-
Containers stuffed with authorised cargo listed above (import to or export from Mali) will be delivered at destination, as per group¡¯s bill of lading terms and conditions.
Containers stuffed with non-authorised are prevented from being carried into Mali by the ECOWAS decision.
According to the clause 10 of our bill of lading, we offer to return of the cargo to the port of loading or take delivery of the cargo in port of discharge where the bill of lading will be accomplished.
Keep cargo on the merchant's behalf under custody of CMA CGM within the limit of one month as from date of discharge at merchant¡¯s costs.
During this period of time if sanctions are suspended/withdrawn, CMA CGM will be in position to perform the post carriage operations.
The ECOWAS border closure arises from a military coup after national election in 2020 that involved the kidnapping of the leader of the opposition.
On January 10, Mali itself announced it would close its borders and recalled several ambassadors with ECOWAS in response to imposed sanctions on the country for deferring elections for four years.
