Russia sanctions rush hits GOP slowdown in US Senate

Author:   Posttime:2022-02-16

TWO US Senators negotiating a package of Russia sanctions have hit a deadlock over the legislation, declaring they are considering votes next week on competing measures, reports Bloomberg.

"We've hit an impasse," said foreign relations chairman Bob Menendez. "But we're still trying to work together to think about a way forward."
Idaho Republican Senator Jim Risch acknowledged they couldn't resolve outstanding issues and suggested that the Republicans and Democrats could offer their own bills.
Such a process would require agreement between Senate leaders and the consent of all 100 senators.
"Everybody should get a chance to vote on how they feel about the different aspects of this," said Mr Risch.
One key obstacle is whether the US should impose secondary sanctions on all Russian banks if Russia invades Ukraine.
Doing so, would break the US-Europe alliance, and could scuttle any deal on a bipartisan package.
