Containership orderbook breaks more records

Author:   Posttime:2022-05-17

THE giant containership order book is setting new records, with capacity on order as a percentage of the fleet breaching 30 per cent, with 7.5 million TEU of capacity now on order according to Braemar ACM, reports Singapore's Splash.

The TEU capacity on order is the highest ever recorded. The last time that containership capacity on order represented 30 per cent of the trading fleet was back in late 2011.
But the 30 per cent ratio is not an agreed-upon figure with Clarksons, suggesting the number is actually 26.9 per cent.
Alphaliner, meanwhile, had a 26.2 per cent number as of mid-April.
Net fleet growth is estimated by Braemar ACM to be four per cent.
By 2023, Braemar ACM now estimates a scheduled 2.5 million TEU of newbuilding deliveries are expected.
In 2024 over three million TEU of fresh capacity is expected to be delivered.
Clarksons puts the 2024 delivery figure at a massive 3.5 million TEU, larger than the entire existent fleet of CMA CGM.
Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has 1.33 million TEU on order, the largest order book by some distance, equivalent to Maersk's, CMA CGM's and Cosco's combined.
