CMA CGM places US$3 billion shipbuilding order in China

CMA CGM, the big French container shipping company, has placed a record-breaking order worth over $3 billion for 16 containerships from China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), reports Dalian's Xinde Marine News.
The order comprises 12 methanol dual-fuel 15,000 TEU vessels and four liquefied natural gas (LNG) duel-fuel 23,000-TEU vessels, with the former being constructed at Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, the latter being built at Hudong-Zhonghua.
The deal was signed on April 6 during a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with CMA CGM chief executive's Rodolphe Saade and several French CEOs present.
This order adds to CMA CGM's previous orders from CSSC, with over 70 containerships already ordered and over 30 already delivered.
The increasing order book for containerships has caused concern among analysts due to declining shipping demand.
