THE seven major ports of the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) handled a total of 732,293 TEU during the month of September, an 11.66 per cent increase from the 655,831 handled a year prior.

Monthly statistics further show an increase of 18.2 per cent in exported containers from 198,529 TEU in 2022 to 234,663 TEU in 2023.

Imported containers also increased by 17.18 per cent to 217,933 TEU in September from 185,986 TEU 12 months ago, according to London's Port Technology.

Sharing a similar trend, transshipments registered a 3.09 per cent gain in volumes with this year's count totalling 279,697 TEU in contrast 271,316 TEU in the prior year.

Cargo throughput was finally back on the growth track with a 2.59 per cent uptick at 26.1 million tonnes as opposed to 25.4 million tonnes in the previous year.

This increase can be attributed to 676,017 tonnes of general cargo, 4.2 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo, and 13.2 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo.

Moreover, MAWANI's ports saw 11.83 per cent additional vessels dock at its berths with a tally of 1,040 ships contrary to last year's 930 ships.
