Island Evolution

Norwegian shipbuilder VARD has launched into the water the first of two hybrid power ocean energy construction vessels (OECVs) it is building for compatriot shipping group Island Offshore.
The vessel, marked NB 977, touched the water at Vard Shipyards Romania – Brăila on February 9, with outfitting now to continue, after which it will head to Vard Langsten in Norway in June for final outfitting and completion.
“Island Offshore has built a large number of vessels at VARD’s shipyards over the past twenty years. All hulls have been constructed in Brăila and Tulcea, before being towed to Norway for completion. Strong relationships and solid project management have been crucial to every project, and there is still a strong focus on effective collaboration and a commitment to delivering a high-quality product. It is a pleasure to see our two latest newbuilds taking shape,” said Roy Viggo Fjørtoft, Project Manager at Island Offshore.
Island Offshore placed an order with VARD for the design and construction of the first hybrid power OECV in May 2024, named Island Evolution, also agreeing on an option for two more vessels. The order for the second vessel, called Island Explorer, came in three months later.
The keel laying for Island Evolution took place in May 2025, with the keel laying for the second OECV following in September 2025.
The sister vessels are of VARD 3 25 design, measuring 120 meters in length. They will be capable of performing subsea operations including inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), pipe laying, subsea infrastructure construction and installation, diving support, and equipment for remotely operated underwater inspection.
The OECVs will feature a 250-ton heave-compensated subsea crane, DP2 capability, and accommodation for 120 personnel.
